Four disciplines.

No generalism.

We cover four industry sectors: Construction & Infrastructure, Energy & Power, Industrial Manufacturing, and Transportation.

Major programmes, tier-one contractors, and public infrastructure delivery. Leadership that can operate across commercial, technical, and political environments simultaneously.

Our Methodology

A retained search is not a faster shortlist.

A retained search is not an accelerated shortlist. It is a disciplined, advisory process defined by rigour, access, and accountability.

Step Slider

Our Methodology

A retained search is not a faster shortlist.

It is a different commitment entirely.

When an infrastructure organisation retains Imperium, they are not purchasing access to a database. They are engaging a search partner who will conduct a documented, exclusive investigation of the available and non-available leadership market — on their behalf, under strict confidentiality.

We carry a deliberate limit on active mandates. This is not a constraint — it is a guarantee that when you commission us, you have our complete attention.

i.

Brief Construction

We work with the commissioning executive and, where appropriate, the board to construct a precise brief — including the qualities that will not appear in a job specification: culture, successor dynamics, and the strategic moment the organisation is navigating.

ii.

Market Investigation

We map the full available leadership market — including those not actively seeking a move. In infrastructure sectors, the best candidates are rarely visible. Our searches reach leaders who would not respond to an advertisement.

iii.

Assessment & Longlist

You receive a documented longlist with our written assessment of each individual — not a CV pack. We present our judgement, so that your time is spent evaluating the best, not filtering the many.

iv.

Shortlist & Client Interviews

We present a shortlist of typically three to five candidates, each known personally to us. We remain actively involved through the interview process, managing both sides with discretion and precision.

v.

Appointment & Guarantee

We manage the offer process and provide a minimum 12-month replacement guarantee. Our commitment does not end with acceptance — we monitor the transition and remain available to the client and the appointed leader.

01

Infrastructure-only practice

We do not search across all sectors. We cover industries sectors (Construction, Energy, Manufacturing, and Transport) because genuine depth in these markets cannot be replicated by a generalist.

02

Retained mandates, exclusively

We accept no contingency assignments. A retained mandate means one firm, one search lead, full accountability. Your appointment receives our undivided attention from brief to completion.

03

Board and C-suite level only

We search for Chief Executives, Managing Directors, Programme Directors, and their direct reports. We do not fill mid-level roles. Every search we conduct is consequential — because our clients' organisations require it to be.

04

Four geographies, genuine presence

We have conducted appointments in London, Riyadh, Nairobi, Rotterdam, and beyond. Our international reach is demonstrated through named markets and completed mandates — not a list of continents.

Our Reach

International search without generic claims.

We demonstrate reach through specific markets, programmes we understand, and cities where we have placed infrastructure leaders.

For cross-border mandates, we bring relationships and market intelligence on both sides.

"We search for leaders who will move — and we know where to find them."

Why Imperium

The advantages of a focused
retained search specialist.

The global executive search firms offer breadth. We offer depth. For infrastructure organisations commissioning at board or C-suite level, the distinction matters — and it is most evident when the search is complicated, cross-border, or genuinely confidential.

01

One lead. One search.
Full accountability.

Your search is led by the same senior practitioner from brief to appointment. Not handed to a junior researcher. Not assigned to a team across three time zones. The person you brief is the person who delivers.

02

Sector knowledge that isn't performed.

We do not search across all sectors and claim infrastructure expertise. We work exclusively in infrastructure disciplines. When we discuss your appointment, we know the regulatory environment, the programme pressures, and the names in the leadership market — because this is all we have ever done.

03

Absolute confidentiality by design.

We do not maintain open talent databases or advertise roles publicly without explicit instruction. A retained mandate with Imperium is conducted with the discretion appropriate to a leadership appointment that affects an organisation's direction, its people, and its reputation.

Large generalist search firms
  • Broad sector coverage — genuine expertise in none
  • Senior partner sells; junior team delivers
  • Database-first methodology — candidates they already know
  • Your mandate competes for attention with dozens of others

  • Candidate relationships prioritised over client relationships
Imperium Executive Search
  • Infrastructure-only practice — four disciplines, genuine depth
  • The principal who briefs the search leads the search
  • Market-first methodology — reaches leaders not on any database
  • Deliberately limited mandate volume protects your search quality
  • Process adapted to the specific complexity of your appointment
  • Client-first: complete confidentiality, documented accountability
Common Questions

Questions from boards
and chief executives.

The most important conversations begin with the right questions. Below are those most frequently asked by organisations commissioning a retained executive search for the first time — or returning after an unsatisfactory experience elsewhere.

If your question is not answered here, we welcome a direct conversation. All enquiries are received personally and treated with absolute discretion.

Discuss A Confidential Appointment →
How does retained search differ from contingency recruitment? +
In a contingency model, multiple firms work on the same role simultaneously, competing to present candidates first. Speed and volume are prioritised. In a retained search, you engage one firm exclusively — and pay a portion of the fee upfront as a commitment on both sides. In return, you receive a documented, exhaustive search of the full market, including leaders who would never apply to an advertised role. For board and C-suite appointments, contingency is not a viable model — the leaders you are trying to reach are not on job boards.
How is confidentiality protected throughout the search? +
We do not advertise your appointment without explicit instruction to do so. When approaching potential candidates, we are discreet about the client's identity until mutual interest is established and appropriate agreements are in place. We do not maintain open talent pools and do not share client briefs with third parties. All enquiries received through this website are handled personally by the principal and are not entered into any shared system.
What is the typical timeline for a retained executive search? +
For board and C-suite mandates in the infrastructure sectors, a well-managed retained search typically takes twelve to sixteen weeks from brief agreement to offer acceptance. Complex cross-border searches or those requiring specific bilingual or regulated-sector experience may take longer. We will give you an honest timeline at the outset, not an optimistic one.
How is the retained search fee structured? +
Our fee is calculated as a percentage of the appointed candidate's total first-year compensation, paid in three equal stages: on engagement, on delivery of the shortlist, and on acceptance of the offer. This structure aligns our incentives with yours. All fee arrangements are agreed in writing before the search begins.
Do you only work with large organisations? +
We work with organisations of varying sizes — from listed infrastructure groups to privately-held contractors, utilities, and government-backed development agencies. What defines our client work is not the size of the organisation but the seniority and criticality of the appointment.
What guarantee do you offer if the appointment doesn't work out? +
We provide a minimum 12-month replacement guarantee on all retained mandates. If the appointed leader departs within this period for reasons related to the suitability of the appointment, we will conduct a replacement search without an additional retainer. The specific terms are documented in our engagement letter.
